Sterilization :-
                        It is the process of destruction of all micro - organisms ( pathogenic and non-pathogenic ) include their spores.

1.Mechanical Method -
 
Scrubbing - 
                      It is useful in :
        - Cleaning of hands.
        - Cleaning of hands.
        - Scrubbing of hands.
        - Cleaning of floor.
        - Cleaning of O.T.
Filtration -
                   It is useful in :
        - Disinfection of water.
        - Disinfection of laboratory liquids.
        - Disinfection of culture media.

2.Physical Method-

Radiations -
                     Types of radiation :
                           - Ultraviolet radiations.
                           - Ionizing radiations.
                           - X-rays
Uses -
        - Prevention of spread of air bore infections.
        - Suppression of surface growing , modules.
        - Suppression of organisms in packed materials.
        - Sterilization of suture , plastic tubing , disposable syringes.

Ultrasonic -
                   These in mechanical vibrations . It is useful in :
       - Destruction of bacteria.
       - Coagulation of protein solution. 
       - Dishwasher.

Heat -
          - Moist Heat
          - Dry Heat

Moist Heat -
                     Moist heat has been four types :
1.Boiling 
2.Steam
3. Tyndallization
4. Pasteurization  

Boiling -
              It is useful in :
        - Sterilization of needles and instruments, syringes, contaminated dishes etc.
        - Destruction of pathogenic bacteria.
        - Destruction of fungi.
        - Destruction of viruses.
        - Destruction of some spores.

Steam -
            - Free flowing steam.
            - Steam under pressure.
            - High vacuum sterilize.

Tyndallization -
                           It is the instrument sterilization. It include applications of steam for thirty minutes on there successive days. It is useful in :
           - Sterilization of vaccine and serum .
           - Sterilization of culture media .

Pasteurization -
                           It is useful in :
            - Sterilization of milk.
            - Sterilization of serum and vaccine.
            - Sterilization of endoscopy.
Methods -
               1.High temperature short time.
               2.Ultra high temperature.
               3. Holder method.

Dry Heat -
                 Example - Hot air oven.

Hot Air Oven :
                        It requires temperature of 160' c for 1-2 hrs.It is useful in:
                 - Sterilization of glass ware , test tube, syringes,   needles.
                 - Sterilization of powder, bottles, pipettes, flask,  petri dishes.
                 - Sterilization of gauze,dressing.
                 - Sterilization of scalpel,scissors .

3.Chemical Method -
       
Antiseptics - 
                     These are chemical substances which prevent the growth of bacteria.

Disinfection -
                      These are chemical substance which kill bacteria.
